The Flettner Rotor Tumbling Wing Saga

The Flettner Rotor has intuitive theoretical appeal because as it tumbles forward in the air, the underside pushes air downward creating a high-pressure zone and the top of the rotor pulls air rearward, simulating the pressure differential of a wing in the classical air pressure analysis of how a wing provides lift. You can see for yourself: take a long narrow sheet of thin balsa, cap each end with a light round balsa disk “rudder”...
