In the 1970s, America and NATO feared what appeared to be an unstoppable Soviet fighter, the MiG-25 FOXBAT. A Soviet forerunner had been observed in the mid-‘60s, the Ye-155, which had set a world record by achieving a speed of 1,441 mph.
