If you need a hard surface on which to hammer something flat, check local garage sales for an inexpensive or broken clothes iron. Remove the bottom plate, drill holes for a couple of flat-head, counter sunk wood screws and attach it to your bench, preferably over one of the legs, so that the impact force of blows is transmitted directly to the floor.
