Compared to the B-52, the HiMat looks tiny but had a wingspan of 15 feet, 7 inches and weighed more than 2 tons!
In 1979, NASA developed the HiMAT (Highly Maneuverable Aircraft Technology), an experimental remote control aircraft that was launched from a B-52 Stratofortress at altitude. The aircraft was flown by a pilot on the ground using a nose camera or with a 3D synthetic vision display called a “visual display”—an early version of First Person View. To make things even more exciting, there was also a TF-104G Starfighter chase plane with a set of backup controls...
