Vought V 173 “Flying Flapjack”

In the efflorescence of aircraft design in the 20th century, many experimenters designed aircraft with a round, disc-shaped, low-aspect-ratio wing planform. Some were flight tested and showed some promise, but, ultimately, this branch of “flying saucer” shaped aircraft did not prevail. Perhaps the most famous was the Vought V 173 “Flying Flapjack,” a Charles H. Zimmerman design.
