WW I Wheel Shields

Early WW I planes used basically enlarged bicycle wheels and tires. The wheels consisted of a hub with bearings, spokes, and an outer rim. Tires were pneumatic, not solid. Palmer was a company that supplied the Allies with airplane tires and wheels and apparently patented the detachable wheel shield. Its purpose was to reduce drag and keep mud from sticking to the rim.
