The big danger when you use pliers to cut wire is that the cut ends usually fly off at high velocity. Fill the cavity in the cutting jaws with silicone tub-sealant or RTV. When it has cured, slice through it with a soap-lubricated blade. Now when you cut, the loose piece will be gripped securely by the rubber filling.
