In 1979, NASA developed the HiMAT (Highly Maneuverable Aircraft Technology), an experimental remote control aircraft that was launched from a B-52 Stratofortress at altitude. The aircraft was flown by a pilot on the ground using a nose camera or with a 3D synthetic vision display called a “visual display”—an early version of First Person View.
